Our Story

Andrea Duff and Karl Zander are The Southern Byways. They are an experienced musical duo delivering heartfelt performances through classic Country / Americana and soulful original songs.  In addition to vocals and harmonies, Andrea and Karl utilise a range of instruments including keys, guitar, resonator, ukulele, banjitar and percussion.  This, along with insightful anecdotes and personal stories, keep every show fresh and interesting.  The Byways are expanding on this format with two Adelaide Fringe shows in 2026 - see below for more information on "Our Mothers' Country Hearts".

So enjoyed our evening being entertained by Andrea and Karl. Great selection of music and they involved the audience with song sheets which was fun. Look forward to enjoying their music again soon".

Our Mothers' Country Hearts - Adelaide Fringe 2026

Join us for an evening of soulful and joyful country, Americana and original music delivered through story and song. Musicians Andrea Duff (keys and vocals) and Karl Zander (guitar, resonator, banjitar, ukelele and vocals) present a musical anthology straight from the hearts of mothers and fathers as they reflect on their own musical influences.  The duo revisits the swirling dance music of the Wonderland ballroom in post-war Adelaide; a mother's vintage sheet-music collection, an absent father's love of rockabilly in Mozambique, the universal trials of the 60s housewife and the meaning of home.  Join us for a captivating evening in the creative and atmospheric community favourite - Cafe Komodo, Prospect.

"We had a lovely night enjoying the music of Southern Byways in the lush and beautifully lit courtyard of Ern Malley. The duo performed a tantalising mix of soulful country classics, Karl's originals (their performance of the very witty 'We Don't Know How He Got In' was the highlight of the show for me!) and several country songs with highly entertaining lyrics. Andrea gave fascinating historical insights into the songs throughout the night and played keys with palpable energy and passion. Karl's baritone voice is a total treat, as is watching him effortlessly switch between electric, acoustic and slide guitar making each song feel like its own unique performance. The duo's sharing of lyric sheets with their audience for selected songs only added to the fun and frivolity of an already highly enjoyable night!"
